It’s almost time for Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW). This year, the world’s largest celebration of entrepreneurship will run from 12 to 16 November in more than 100 cities around the world, and Cape Town is one of them.

Since 2008, during one week in November, GEW inspires people everywhere through activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators. In the Western Cape, Cape Town Entrepreneurship Week will feature a host of expos, workshops, hackathons and startup pitching events.
Two events we recommend checking out during that week are Startup Weekend and #GovHackSA.
Following on from the success of the inaugural Startup Weekend in South Africa, a sequel to the 54 hour startup incubation event will be held at Bandwidth Barn, from 16 to 18 November.
During the two day event, intrepid entrepreneurs pitch ideas, form groups, build a functioning startup and compete for prizes to help get their startup off the ground.
Prizes include a free VIP trip to Rio De Janeiro for the Global Entrepreneurship Congress, a VIP trip to San Francisco to tour Googleplex, and at least US$15,000 in startup support services.
The #GovHackSA event is an SA first that is hoping to attract developers who want to make a difference by using Government Data to solve community problems.
The one day, feel-good hackathon will be held on 10 November at Bandwidth Barn. There’s no registration fee and participants can look forward to free food and beverages throughout the day.
As a bonus, the event is sponsored by Mxit, so winning teams will have the chance to spend a day with the Mxit apps team, receive a promotions campaign for a Mxit app and a R5000 branding voucher from Assignment 3.
