Lagos-based ecommerce site, Jumia, has had a busy 2013, from launching an Android app, to winning The Best New Retail Launch of the Year, to creating its own “ecommerce campus in West Africa,” the Rocket Internet-backed pride and joy is showing no signs of slowing down. Its next play is an upgrade to its affiliate programme — now called the Partner Programme — which allows everyone to earn money easily by sharing links on their own websites or social media platforms such as Twitter, Google+ and Facebook.

Tunde Kehinde, Jumia co-founder, said this of the upgrade: “This new program opens up to all people — everyone is welcome to participate to boost their website, blog or social media channel with our brand and additionally profit from it.”

The Partner’s Programme works like this:

  • Jumia allows third parties to place links, ads, and other types of visual references on their websites or social media channels with direct traffic linking to the Jumia homepage.
  • In return, associates (or partners) get up to 9% commission for one sale when customers use the links for purchases.
  • For the first month, partners earn 500 (just over US$3) on top of the commission for each order.

Kehinde states that the affiliate programme is an easy working “win-win situation” that is completely performance based. This means that the more people someone brings to the Jumia website, the more they profit from it.

Kehinde adds, “we are happy to give this opportunity to everyone and continue the successful affiliate programme to a Partner’s Programme where everyone can join in.”

Jumia is best described as the Amazon of Africa, offering over 50 000 products in its catalog, including international brands. Before this upgrade, the affiliate programme had been joined by over 700 partners within one year.
