Onyx showcases its ground-breaking Glass tech at big international vending event

South African display technology startup, Onyx Display Media, is off to Italy to showcase its display Glass solution at Venditalia, an international vending trade show.

Onyx describes its glass solution as a “revolutionary patent pending solution, that may be retro-fitted to any cooler, horizontal freezer, and it may even stand completely alone – not depending on either”.

The glass allows for a host of static and interactive content to be display in HD. According to the company is has “developed specialised proprietary software that allows for this to be achieved, and managed from a central point — to anywhere in the world.”

The startup is one of eight international vending partners invited to participate on the Intel display area at the show.

The decision to incorporate Onyx Display Media among the international vendors was apparently motivated by an “international search for dynamic organisations that are pushing the envelope within the technology and vending sector”.

Invitations to participate were dependent on a strong demonstration of user experience, transactional functionality and a proven business model.

Onyx will be showcasing an interactive transparent LCD platform that displays High Definition video content, which it says can be retrofitted to any existing glass panel — and is completely independent of any external light source.

The offering incorporates Intel Retail Client Manager, Intel Audience Impression Metric (AIM) and Galileo – a microprocessor board based on the Intel Quark System On Chip X1000 platform.

This system, says Intel, is meant to replace costly human based retail research while “raising the bar for the insight available from machine based counting systems”.

“Our decision to include Onyx Display Media is an exciting one – not only from a South African perspective, but also in terms of the potential behind the technology they have developed,” says Vince Resente, Enterprise Technology Specialist Intel South Africa. “Intel is extremely pleased to have been able to provide some of the supporting systems that operate as an integration into Onyx-Glass.

We are certain that this technology, in partnership with the Intel AIM suite, will attract a significant amount of interest during Venditalia”.

“The opportunity to showcase our product and partnership with Intel on the world stage is significant for us. It indicates that South African technology companies have the capacity to develop systems that compete with and perhaps lead international markets. We sincerely look forward to demonstrating Onyx-Glass at the Intel stand in Milan” adds Onyx Display Media Co-Founder Andrew Coudounaris.

This is the ninth iteration of the specialist occupational fair, which is hosted every two years and incorporates over 300 exhibitors.
