Top startup events in South Africa, Africa you should know about this week [25/04/2016]

Looking to get into the South African startup scene or scratch up on some of your skills? Well, you’ve come to the right place. There are loads of competitions, networking sessions and workshops happening around South Africa and the rest of the continent (namely Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana) that we’ve rounded up to make your life a bit easier.

3D Printing and CAD

A part of the Modern Alchemists series, this edition will see two makers talk about how they built their homemade 3D printers. They will tell the audience the history of the desktop 3Dprinter and then run a brief workshop on CAD.

Modern Alchemists is a show and tell of all your projects from art, graphics, board games, code to electronics.

Modern Alchemists brings together all skill sets e.g. artists, gamers, artists, engineers, coders etc into one physical space to make and create!

Social Entrepreneurs – Free Toolkit Workshop

Nesta UK and Caribou Digital will be hosting a free workshop for social entrepreneurs using Nesta’s Development Impact & You toolkit.

The DIY Toolkit has been especially designed for development practitioners to invent, adopt or adapt ideas that can deliver better results. It looks at the stages of innovation to help you develop your innovation and scale it up.

Nairobi

Doors Open Day

Nairobi Garage is the first co-working space in Nairobi, with 130 desks in total, team rooms, meeting rooms and a kickass event space. Companies such as Uber, Yum and Mdundo have all started their journey in Kenya out of this space.

This event allows anyone curious about the space to see what’s on offer.

Monthly eHealth event series

This eHealth Meetup is the beginning of a monthly event series to provide a platform for conversations and networking!

#WhatsNext Mobility

#WhatsNext is a monthly speaker series that features a panel discussion and innovation showcase and draws attendance by innovative corporations, NGOs,entrepreneurs, media and other stakeholders to discuss the future of a particular sector. This month’s focus will be on the future of tech-enabled mobility solutions in the logistics and transportation sectors. As it is the tradition at #WhatsNext, all panelists will share some insight into the future looks like and what they see as the next big thing in the sector.

Elizabeth Resor of Ma3Route will present the findings on traffic patterns in Nairobi and accidents reported to key stakeholders in transport and road safety and thereafter explore the potential utility of such data set.

Nairobi Tech Week

Nairobi Tech Week labels itself as Sub Saharan Africa’s largest tech event. This year will also be the Twitter Developer Relations team and AngelHack’s first event in Africa. Topics for the 2016 event have been crowdsourced.

AngelHack Nairobi 2016

The #SmartCityNairobi challenge is aimed at the developer community in Nairobi in conjunction with Twitter and the iHub. Developers will have the chance to create a solution for the city using Twitter’s API to solve a problem in the city. A jury of experts during demos at AngelHack Nairobi will choose three semi-finalists who will win $2,000 each per team onsite AND get the opportunity to compete for the ultimate prize of up to US$10 000.

#FromTheEast Entrepreneurship Forum | Theme: Business Financing
