Top startup events in South Africa, Africa you should know about this week [21/11/2016]

Looking to get into the South African startup scene or scratch up on some of your skills? Well, you’ve come to the right place. There are loads of competitions, networking sessions and workshops happening around South Africa and the rest of the continent (namely Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana) that we’ve rounded up to make your life a bit easier.

StartCPT Hosts Catherine Lückhoff (NicheStreem)

Founder of MANGO-OMC, HQAfrica and now recently, NicheStreem (note the 2 e’s in the name). This being Catherine’s 3rd Startup, and moving even more into the music industry, it will be great to hear how she put that all together and raised international funding.

Lioness Lean In Breakfast Event – Cape Town

The Lioness Lean In Breakfast Series is based on a breakfast networking and speaker presentation format that is highly popular with women entrepreneurs in Africa. The format of each Lioness Lean In is a two-and-a-half hour event, commencing with breakfast and networking, followed by inspirational guest speakers sharing their own entrepreneurial journeys and experiences; a presentation on inspirational Lionesses of Africa from across the continent; a presentation from the sponsor; and rounded-off with an open Q&A session.

The ‘Hard Lessons Learned in Raising a Startup’ Story

Join us for the last fireside chat of the year with Dewald Nolte, Senior Vice President of Partnerships and Alliances at Entersekt – one of Stellenbosch’s most successful tech companies. Dewald is one of four founders responsible for building Entersekt’s global network of strategic partners, and with a technical ability as impressive as his solid business acumen, he has also been involved in several successful projects further afield, including the A-Darter missile program for Denel Dynamics.

For people working in startups, lean (startup) coffee is a weekly 1-hour coffee that runs a mash-up of leancoffee.org with theleanstartup.com. Unlike other startup meetups, lean (startup) coffee is agendaless, speakerless and talks about what you care about. We each propose topics, vote on them and talk about the most popular ones for a few minutes. Cape R User Group R/Finance Meetup

Stuart Reid (Quantitative Strategist at NMRQL and blogger at Turing Finance) will be presenting his R implementation of the heteroscedasticity-consistent variance ratio test developed by Lo and MacKinlay in 1988 to test the Random Walk Hypothesis. Stuart will then test whether or not the variance ratio test can distinguish between random fictitious securities and those traded on the JSE.
