Smorgasbord is the food startup incubator you’ve been waiting for
Coming into full force next year, Smorgasbord is an organisation dedicated to supporting and incubating food startups.
Smorgasbord is dedicated to building and sustaining the food and beverage sector in SA through their platform dubbed Feasts. This platform will give aspiring entrepreneurs in the food industry a way to showcase their products and skills.
These Feasts will be running throughout the major hubs of SA such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein and Pretoria. Furthermore, Feasts will be running throughout the new year from 25 March all the way through to November 2017. The team behind Smorgasbord have also aimed at getting space at all major music and social festivals nationwide.
Another initiative is Food Salons, which allows ‘food-preneurs’ to pitch their products to industry professionals and brands in a speed dating experience. The goal is to get these products into relevant sectors.
Smorgasbord aims to give food startups a helping hand through their platform
The events will also allow for the eventual choosing of the food startup of the year. A team of judges will help adjudicate the winner, who will walk away with R150 000 in prize money.
Alongside their Food Salon initiative, they will also be introducing Graze, a conference aimed at exploring the intrinsic food culture in SA. This conference will be focusing on producers, street food, growers, crafters as well as the formal sector of our food and beverage industries.
Smorgasbord also creates market opportunities and invests in early stage food businesses.
