  • The tech behind Parkfind: Here’s how it allows you to find, park, pay [Sponsored]

Parkfind, an app developed by Street Parking Solutions (SPS), allows users to search for, navigate to and pay for parking anywhere in the Cape Town central business district (CBD) in real time. With layers of technology behind it, have you ever wondered how it all works? It took two years to develop the architecture around Parkfind, the business model and the internally developed parking management system that forms the backbone of Parkfind, says SPS operations manager Josh Lindenberg. “We understand the parking business, we understand parking management and we understand how sensors work,” says Lindenberg. He says the app is unique in that SPS has...

  • What we learnt from Snapscan at MTN’s app breakfast

MTN Business's App of the Year awards is a pretty noteworthy event in the tech industry, featuring quite a few notable representatives. To encourage entries (and for networking), the company held a breakfast event, featuring a rather interesting speaker lineup. Representatives from CustomApp, Uber South Africa and Snapscan were on-hand to dish out some knowledge. But it was Snapscan's Rupert Sully, head of sales and business development, who got our attention. So what did we learn then? Snapscan wasn't a mobile service at first It's weird to think of the payment app as anything but a mobile service, but Sully said the service was...

  • SnapScan’s Kobus Ehlers on keeping up with SA’s ever-changing payments landscape

Kobus Ehlers is behind one of South Africa's top-ranked apps, and arguably the only successful startup to have made mobile payments relevant in the country. Even though multinational telecom giants like Vodacom struggle to get mobile payments off the ground in the country, SnapScan today boasts over 20 000 merchant clients, ranging from parking marshals to restaurants. While user numbers aren't disclosed, it's growing much faster than the merchant clients'. Yet, while growth is all good and well for certain niche sectors, the company is regularly experimenting with new features and integrations to feel out the ever-changing market and keep up...
