  • Springleap’s new Creatives Insights platform helps brands expand to foreign markets

As more and more foreign brands try to ride the growth that many African countries are experiencing, the more critical local insights about these complex markets become. The South African and New York-based design startup, Springleap, is announcing the launch of its Creatives Insights platform. This new offering enables clients to plug into its co-creation community for insights and feedback into any African or global country. Late last year the company secured over R4-million just before the company opened up its pan-African, Middle Eastern arm based in Johannesburg. • Springleap goes big: expands into Middle Eastern, pan-African markets

Springleap is on a mission to take over the world. Backed by a new group of experienced industry leaders and a community of 22 000 creatives, the crowdsourced design startup is expanding into the Middle Eastern and pan-African markets. Initially hailing from an office in Cape Town -- 2014's World Capital of Design -- the crowdsourcing design startup is today operating in New York City as well as Johannesburg. News of its expansion comes hot on the heels of it raising a R4.1-million funding round a few weeks ago from a group of international investors. Read more: SA crowdsource design startup...

  • SA crowdsource design startup Springleap secures R4m+ Angel round

South African crowdsource design startup Springleap has just announced that it has secured a seed round of US$400 000 (R4.1-million) from a mix of South African and British Angel Investors including Colenso Capital, Clearwater, Kevin Gaskell and Crystal Bay Capital. Chairman of Springleap advisory board Kevin Gaskell, who is also the former MD of Porsche and BMW, boasts that "the team at Springleap had gained significant traction in a short amount of time with Fortune 500 brands and have a big vision to empower the creative industry." The investment will be used to help fuel expansion throughout Africa and beyond. “With...

  • Collaborative consumption: eBay, entrepreneurship and Africa’s mass potential

Technology has changed the world, no doubt about that. By extension it has changed the way we live our lives, do business and make money. Collaborative consumption is of course nothing new. Long before the advent of the internet and smartphones, we had carpooling and timeshares. The beauty of technology is just that it has made the sharing economy so much more accessible. Now you, the potential investor (or sharer) just need to figure out how and why it works so well. For those unfamiliar, the sharing economy, or collaborative consumption, refers to a marketplace that provides access to products, talent,...

  • Life after t-shirts: Ventureburn gets the exclusive behind Springleap’s pivot

Springleap made a name for itself selling t-shirts based on crowdsourced designs. It was more or less an African version of Threadless, with artists’ designs voted on by the Springleap community and the winning design emblazoned on t-shirts which go up for sale. While the company claims to have been reasonably successful, founder Eran Eyal decided that it was time for a change. Speaking to Ventureburn, Eyal detailed how he took complete control of the company and set about transforming it into a premium design community aimed at helping brands crowdsource design. In our discussions he revealed a couple of...

  • 30 brilliant African tech startups

The methodology behind this list of startups had two simple directives. First, the startup had to have African roots and secondly it had to be brilliant. More specifically, we were looking for that type of brilliance that exudes intelligence, talent, quality or simply, something fresh. Of course brilliance, like most things in life, is subjective, so we went into this journey with an open mind. Tabula rasa if you will and we hoped to recognise brilliance when we saw it. We did, over and over again. Why did we focus on Africa? The continent’s one-billion people are coming online and 600-million...

  • Evly.com first look: Will this new crowdsourcing social network work?

Sometimes it just so happens that a new technology service really speaks to you. The first time I saw Groupon, I thought that it was one of the most compelling services seen in quite some time. Clearly I was not the only one. Google is rumoured to have made an offer to acquire Groupon for US$3-billion. My first look at Evly however did not elicit quite the same initial reaction. The crowdsourcing social network had a soft launch this month. Its founder, Eran Eyal, of Springleap fame, touted their efforts as cutting-edge and having the potential to revolutionise the internet. Based...

  • Evly.com: The art of outsourcing crowdsourcing

Evly.com claims to be the "world's first crowdsourcing social network" and launches next Monday with the goal of bringing users together to "solve new challenges". The site is the brainchild of the team who developed Springleap, a Cape Town-based T-shirt design crowdsourcing company, based on threadless.com, which has carved out a remarkable niche on the web. Crowdsourcing is the method of sourcing a solution from a crowd, community or social network as opposed to a single contractor with the understanding that the wisdom of the crowd is greater than the wisdom of the individual. As an example South African snack-food...
