Top startup events in South Africa, Africa you should know about this week [30/05/2016]

Looking to get into the South African startup scene or scratch up on some of your skills? Well, you’ve come to the right place. There are loads of competitions, networking sessions and workshops happening around South Africa and the rest of the continent (namely Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana) that we’ve rounded up to make your life a bit easier.

Cape Town

Startup Grind Hosts Moira Johnston & Nicky Rosin

This month’s Cape Town edition of Startup Grind sees the entrepreneurial talk series host EventRoom co-founders Moira Johnston & Nicky Rosin. The pair’s startup, EventRoom, describes itself as an Airbnb for event spaces.

Its primary aim is to streamline and simplify the fragmented event-booking process with features such as comprehensive search and filter options, upfront pricing, photos and, in the future, reviews.

Building products from the outside in

Product managers are responsible for building the right product. When product management is done correctly, it creates a product that contributes to the bottom line.

In this workshop, participants will to take a product idea and develop a strategy for it using a “strategy canvas”. They will then formulate testable hypotheses and construct experiments to test strategy with customers. We will also determine the market opportunity for the product.

Jozihub Academy — ‘First Bite At Building IPhone Apps’

This event is targeted at beginers who are interested in learning what it takes to design and build apps for iPhones regardless – no programming experience required. According to the event organisers, all you need to do is “bring along you apple computer (Macbook, iMac etc.) and your thinking cap”.

The Kampus edition will be its first event to officially launch the product in addition to launching additional product features.

#SmartCityNairobi Finals

The #SmartCityNairobi Challenge is brought to you by Twitter and the iHub. Participants were challenged to use the Twitter API to build solutions for smart cities.

On 3 June, the finalists will pitch and the winner, who will walk away with US$10 000, will be announced.
