Top startup events in South Africa, Africa you should know about this week [13/06/2016]
Looking to get into the South African startup scene or scratch up on some of your skills? Well, you’ve come to the right place. There are loads of competitions, networking sessions and workshops happening around South Africa and the rest of the continent (namely Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana) that we’ve rounded up to make your life a bit easier.

#WomenInTechCPT: Tech Meets Journalism and Education
June’s #WomenInTechCPT theme is tied into the upcoming Youth Day. The event will see presentations from Kosma Von Maltitz and Diana Neille, two women who are in involved in technology in various ways which are changing communities for the greater good.
Kosma von Maltitz has a MSc in Astrophysics and Space Science. At Siyavula she heads up the EdTech Production team who design and create Physics, Chemistry and Maths content. Kosma also presents shows at the Iziko Planetarium and does Astronomy outreach whenever she gets a chance.
Diana Neille meanwhile is a journalist and media entrepreneur with an MSc in Broadcast Journalism from Columbia University in the City of New York. The former Executive Multimedia Producer at eNews Channel Africa, Diana formed a new editorial production called Chronicle out of a desire to see better, more innovative storytelling and more inclusivity in mainstream media. Diana has a keen interest in the relationship between technology and journalism, specifically in how and which existing – and up-and-coming – tech tools can contribute to a useful, vibrant and relevant national media, and which are more trouble than they’re worth.

This event is a chance for people in the Joburg startup scene to meet with Technovera, the winner of the R1-million top prize in the recently completed #Hack.jozi competition.
Headed up by Neo Hutiri, TechnoVera aims to reduce the waiting time for chronic medications at public healthcare facilities down to three minutes — the process can currently take anywhere from three to five hours.
