Ma is due to address an event that takes place today in Joburg. His speech at the event — Netpreneurs: The Rise of Africa’s Digital Lions — will be streamed live on YouTube from 1pm Cenral African Time.
The four-hour event, which is an initiative of the Alibaba Business School, Unctad and the Jack Ma Foundation, will be held at the Linder Auditorium located at Wits Parktown Education Campus.
Yesterday (7 August), Unctad announced in a post on its Facebook page that the event will be streamed here.
Jack Ma will launch a prize and speak at the Netrepreneurs: The Rise of Africa’s Digital Lions event taking place this afternoon
Several high profile figures are expected to attend the event, including Unctad secretary general Mukhisa Kituyi, and Alibaba Group vice president Brian Wong. In all, three panel discussions will take place during the conference.
The first will see Botwana’s minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Bogolo Kenewendo, South Africa’s minister for Science and Technology Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, University of Johannesburg vice chancelor and principal Tshilidzi Marwala discuss regulations and policies around nurturing the digital economy.
Thereafter, Africinvest Venture Capital Fund director Selma Ribica, Africa Venture Capital Investments regional head Wale Ayeni and Mara Corporation founder Ashish Thakkar will discuss access to capital in a panel discussion moderated by Dalberg Digital Technology Practice partner Robin.
The last panel discussion of the conference — which will focus on how digital talents can enable Africans to power the new economy — will feature Afrilabs Foundation executive director Anna Ekeledo, Andela chief strategy officer Wambui Kinya, Wits University acting vice principal Tawana Kupe, and Rise ecosystem manager Camilla Swart.
Three entrepreneurs: MAX.ng co-founder Adetayo Bamiduro, ChiSwara founder Catherine Mahugu, and YWBN executive chairman Nthabeleng Likotsi will also speak about their startups.
Ma is expected to announce the launch of the Jack Ma Africa Netrepreneur Prize. The prize aims to support exemplary young internet leaders and speak on the digital economy towards the end of the event.
