*Correction: The top three teams in the Ayoba hackathon will win a share of a R150 000 prize pool — and not R150 000 for each of the top three, as we had initially reported. Sorry about that.

SA based messaging app Ayoba, together with the UCT Graduate School of Business’s Solution Space and Geekulcha, will be hosting a virtual hackathon this Friday to Sunday (3 to 6 April) for African developers.

The event aims to introduce the opening of Ayoba as a platform for developers and the super-app to third parties.

The top five teams from the virtual hackathon will then compete for a top spot for the grand prizes at a physical (in-person) one-day hackathon venue or via a guided virtual participation platform, depending on the measures taken to battle the current Covid-19 situation.

The top three teams at Ayoba’s hackathon will each win R150 000 in prize money

The teams that develop the winning solutions will receive complimentary co-working space at the Ayoba offices, technical, marketing and development support, as well as a share of R150 000 in prize money for the hackathon’s top three teams.

Developers will have an opportunity to get creative and launch services through micro-apps.

Over two days, developers and start-ups will be given preview access to a developer sandbox environment. The teams will also have access to coaches providing tech, UI/UX and business support.

The challenge calls for ideas on how to make creative use of the Ayoba platform to build services and solutions that meet the daily needs of African consumers and businesses.

On the Sunday, teams will pitch their work to a panel of experts.

Selected ideas can also gain entry to the Solution Space’s E-track incubation programme.
