South African eCommerce platform OneDayOnly has raised R150k in donations towards Cape Town firefighters who were able to control a blaze that started on 18 April 2021.
OneDayOnly raises R150k to support firefighters
A fire that started early on Sunday last week wreaked havoc within Cape Town, causing structural damage to the University of Cape Town, Table Mountain resident’s property, and other integral structures. The hard-working firefighters and emergency services were able to control the fast-spreading fire and protect both residents of the City and their homes.
In an effort to support the men and women risking their lives to save others, OneDayOnly launched the firefighter’s donation initiative on its eCommerce platform.
In an official press statement, OneDayOnly announces that through its campaign it was able to raise a whopping R150 000.
”As the news broke, leading daily deals site, OneDayOnly immediately went into action and loaded an indefinite ‘daily deal’ dedicated to raising funds for Volunteer Wildfire Firefighters to help sustain exhausted volunteers. Within 24 hours of loading the deal, OneDayOnly has managed to raise over R150, 000! In addition, the team based Cape Town has delivered over 350 sandwiches, energy drinks, sweets, and some medicinal supplies.”
The funds raised will be distributed to servicing the people of Cape Town and its surroundings with firefighting services through Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS).
According to reports, the VWS organisation relies solely on donations to fund the initiative, and money that has not been used to sustain the current team battling the blazes, will go toward training and kitting out new recruits like the ones that have just started training and were in the front line over the past weekend.
says Laurian Venter, Director at OneDayOnly explains that the eCommerce platform is committed to assisting the local communities.
“We are passionate about our communities and giving back. These fires are devastating – not only for the countless people that have been evacuated and buildings destroyed but also because of the wildlife endemic to the area that will need restoration and rehabilitation.”
How does it work
Locals can simply visit the OneDayOnly website or mobile app and scroll down till they find the below option. Once found, click on the item and purchase a donation from R50, R100, R200, and R600. All the funds raised will be given to the Volunteer Wildfire Services.
