Ghana’s student app startup Flippy Campus is going to DEMO Africa 2015
Flippy Campus, a made-in-Ghana product that aims to improve students’ campus experience has become one of the first startups that will be pitching to investors at the one of the continent’s biggest startup event, DEMO Africa, held later this year in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Flippy Campus team emerged the most outstanding startup among the ten that participated in the DEMO Africa pre-pitch event in Accra. According to the organisers, Flippy Campusu stood out and the team was able to convince the jury on their ability to link innovation, creativity and scalability.
Students that follow Flippy Campus channels can access campus events from their halls and social groups — they can also set reminders for these events.
David Sleek, founder of Flippy Campus said he is optimistic of the startup’s future. “I am elated at this win and I look forward to learning more from other entrepreneurs and mentors at the DEMO Africa event in Lagos come September.”
In his remark, DEMO Africa’s Accra event director Martin Obuya said entrepreneurs in Africa can create wealth using innovations. “What took place today is a clear demonstration of the great ability of entrepreneurs across Africa to create wealth from world class solutions which solve our own problems first, then the rest of the world,” he said.
Todd Holcombe, Senior lecturer at Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), corroborated Martin. He added that the rate of technology adoption in various sectors across Africa has risen significantly. “Africa has taken significant strides in securing its future through technology; it is very encouraging to see young people’s enthusiasm to shoulder this responsibility,” he said.
By winning the pre-pitch event, organizers of DEMO Africa said Flippy Campus has secured its space to launch its product at the DEMO Africa stage later in September.
Similar pre-DEMO Africa events are scheduled to hold in Nairobi on 12 June, Cairo on 22 June and Harare on 24 June for pre-screening of projects in East, North and South Africa.
