treadFEST 2017 – five stages with Locnville, Sketchy Bongo, Holly Wasserfall
treadFEST 2017 — which takes place from 3 to 6 December in the Drakensberg — presents five stages with a mix of music genres: Jerry and the Bandits, Holly Wasserfall, Locnville, Sketchy Bongo, Monark are just six among a host of bands and DJs in the pipeline.
Jerry and the Bandits’ latest EP, Fiction in Folktale, is the result of passion, hard work, long hours, and hoarse voices.
“Many people get confused by the title we have chosen but it’s not so confusing if you think about it”, says vocalist Jerry. “It basically means that we are passing our stories through to others by use of our music, that’s essentially all we really want.”
Together the four build the feel-good energy that comes with their folk songs, which aim to get the crowd singing along.
Durban’s house music sensation, Holly Wasserfall, concludes her 2017 national tour by joining the treadFEST line-up, showcasing her signature sound with hit singles such as “Dangerous”.
Holly makes music that reflects her deep love for the country of her birth and her determination not to be a passive observer and consumer of the cultural context in
which she lives.
Her exploration of Afro-House – the genre that has taken over from kwaito as the soundtrack of South African youth – has taken her on a journey into the underbelly of house, where she has witnessed sub-genres and new genres making their appearance.
Among these is gqom, the Durban-grown, sparse, beat-driven sound that is currently being exported around the globe.
Identical twin brothers Andrew and Brian Chaplin are better known as Locnville – a South African electro hop music duo. The twins are singer-songwriters, song producers and musicians, in addition to being guitarists, drummers and business entrepreneurs.
Their grandfather was the first cousin of Charlie Chaplin, so their multiple talents clearly run in the family genes.
Sun in My Pocket, their debut album peaked at No 1 on the RISA South African Albums Chart in 2010 and won them the MK Award for best newcomer. Their second and
third albums, Running to Midnight and Taste the Weekend have propelled their meteoric rise on the music scene.

Durban based record producer Sketchy Bongo (aka Yuvir Pillay) is instantly recognisable by the signature ski mask, in which he performs. He opened for Justin Bieber, with crowds of over 60 000, so he certainly knows how to get the crowd going. His genres cover hip hop, pop and house.
Together with his friend Aewon Wolf, Sketchy Bongo started the Wolf Pack, which consists of a select group of producers, artists, graphic designers, rappers and kwaito artists who have come together with a similar vision.
