Little fishing village in Morocco still Africa’s top digital nomad destination

Looking for an African digital nomad destination to set up camp in for 2018? Why not try the sleepy fishing and surfing village of Taghazout in Morocco.

The small town in country’s south west is Africa’s leading destination for digital nomads, according to Nomadlist.com, where travellers currently rank it 17 out of hundreds of destinations (in 2016 it reached as high as fifth place on the same ranking, according to CNN).

Cape Town is not too far behind, at 45 — ahead of such places as Palo Alto (51), Taipei (56) and Stockholm (60).

Topping Nomadlist.com currently is Bangkok, Thailand followed by Ubud, Bali. Destinations that are affordable, do well as travel spots and have good internet fare the best.

1. Taghazout (Morocco)

Taghazout averages $925 per month for the average cost of living for three months, compared to $1608 for Cape Town.

Luanda, ranked third on the continent, but currently at 106th place overall comes in at an average of $3087 a month. Not exactly cheap (it also contains a warning recommending travellers not travel there for safety concern).

2. Cape Town (SA)

In comparison to Taghazout, Cape Town features better on nightlife and walkability, but the internet speed in the South African city is however a bit slow — at just 3mbps (there is no measure for the Moroccan town).

3. Luanda (Angola)

Luanda might seem exotic, but it’s ranked poorly for safety (worse than Cape Town), traffic safety, peace and cost of living.

Other places which rank highly include: Barcelona (3), Canggu, Bali (4) and Budapest, Hungry (5).
