Geo-location is a becoming a hotly contested space right now. The latest entrant in the space is South Africa’s appening, a mobile event app that allows users to keep up to date with local events. The apps targets events to users in their specific areas pushing the information to their mobile phone or tablets.

The creator of the app, Dale Amler, reckons “appening answers a question that we have all asked, what is there to do.”
Amler says the app can be used to find a wide variety of events:
appening enables users to find a wide range of events, happening either right now or in the future, covering a diverse range of interests; anything from live music and comedy to expos, organic markets, marathons and more. These events can be searched for based on genre, proximity, event name or possible artists and performers. Users can also share events with friends on social networks, add events to their device calendars and view the location of events on their phones or devices with great ease.
He adds: “Technology has always rendered things obsolete; we aim from today to render boredom obsolete. Event organisers, artists and venue owners now have a cost-effective way of marketing their event. appening puts events right into peoples’ pockets.”
The app touts its self as a consolidated, easy-to-use event listing application that is being launched in South Africa but has a definite ambition towards going global too. It’s available on iOS, Android and BlackBerry and free to download.
