WooThemes enters online course market with Sensei WordPress plugin

WordPress theme and extension developer, WooThemes, is entering the online course market through Sensei, the company’s latest WordPress plugin.

Launched earlier this week, Sensei — previously code-named LMS — integrates with WooCommerce, the WooThemes eCommerce platform. This means that teachers can create courses within WordPress, and then charge for them.

Sensei integrates with existing WordPress themes and presents a familiar workflow — creating a course or lesson is similar to creating a new page or post in WordPress. Sold as a learning management plugin, Sensei allows for the creation of quizzes and the setting of pre-requisite courses. Teachers can specify a required quiz percentage that students need to attain in order to mark the lesson as complete.

Sensei covers the student registration process and allows students to track their progress for each course they participate in. The Sensei teacher dashboard gives an overview of course content and registered students, including their grades as well as active and completed courses.

The plugin starts at US$79 for a single site licence. Sensei will compete with sites like Udemy and Learnable, but is likely to be a compelling option for those already familiar with the WordPress publishing workflow.
