By now you should know the benefits of having a business online. In an initiative to further promote these benefits, free website builder Yola has announced a Buildathon — a contest that invites people to be creative, independent and take their businesses online.

Originally founded in South Africa, Cape Town, Yola focuses on helping small and medium-sized businesses build and grow their online presence. By having introduced certain features such as a simplified drag-and-drop Sitebuilder that makes it easy for users without any technical knowledge to build a professional website, it has over 8-million users to date.

“The Yola Buildathon contest will give people the opportunity to showcase their customized websites and be a part of what makes Yola great,” says Trevor Harries-Jones, CEO of Yola. “We also want people to know how easy and fun it is to build a website.”

Participants are to create and submit a new, three-page website with original content using the free Yola Site builder for a chance to win a Grand, Second, Third place and User Favorite awards.

To stand a chance of winning, you should submit your new site by 9 February. First prize winnings include having the site converted into a Theme on one of Yola’s Styles, a one-year subscription to Yola Gold, access to a bunch of more exclusive features, and more.

Building a website sounds more complicated than it is. However daunting it might be, to encourage potential online business owners, Yola has published Part 1 of its first eBook, Get Started Building Your Website — a free comprehensive guide that shows you how to plan and design a website using available technology.
