Research company BuiltWith uses data captured from more than a quarter of a billion websites to show us how active the global ecommerce scene is, as well as which online shopping cart tools are being used the most. Most notably, the stats indicate that the online shopping website plugin, WooCommerce, has being the most popular over the last few months.

This chart below shows how the global shopping volume changed based on data from more than 100,000 participating ecommerce websites in the last five months. It comes at little surprise that December is the peak shopping season, which is followed by a come-down that endures all the way through January into February.
Both Canada and France lead the pack with a volume spike at the beginning of December, followed by a slump across all countries at the beginning of January and then a climb again towards the end of February.
This pie chart below shows us WooCommerce was the most-used tool for online shop owners between November 2013 and March 2014. Out of all the sites that took part in the research, WooCommerce led with 12.07%, followed by Zen Cart at 9.78%, Magneto at 9.69%, and OpenCart 9.47%.
WooCommerce, a WordPress plugin, launched in 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa and has seen impressive growth ever since. Between May 2012 and May 2013, there was a massive 458% revenue growth, averaging 38% per month. It’s a tool that allows anyone with the initiative and a WordPress site to sell things online.
