Want froyo? Uber is bringing on-demand dessert to South Africa

Frozen yoghurt toppings

Do you sometimes take a stroll down the street and suffer from an incurable craving for frozen yoghurt? You’re not alone… and Uber wants to help. The smart taxi startup is back with another crazy cool on-demand delivery option — it’s sending out fleets of cars stocked with dessert in South Africa on Saturday 19 July.

In a follow up to its previous ice cream escapades, the company will be giving users in 144 cities in 38 countries worldwide the option to request a ice cream delivery (in addition to the usual taxi options). They simply open their app, switch from car to an ice cream cone, and wait for the frozen goodness to come to them. It’s all charged to their linked card as usual, saving them the hassle of tracking down and paying cash for the dessert.

This year also marks the first time Uber will be bringing the option to South African cities like Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria, where it will be delivering frozen yoghurt between 11H00 and 17H00 (a day later than other locations globally). It’s also the largest roll out of on-demand ice cream delivery so far for the company, with Uber users being able to order dessert on six continents in almost 100 new cities.

While its currently winter in South Africa, Uber will also be supplying each froyo fan with scarves to warm up while they chow down. The swirls of goodness will be provided by Myog in Cape Town, and Filo Yoghurt in the other cities, who will be stocking roaming Uber X and Uber Black cars with the dessert. New Uber users will also be able to apply the code (icecreamjhb / icecreamdbn / icecreamct) to get R200 off their first Uber ride. So, what do you get and how much does it cost?

Johannesburg/Pretoria and Durban – R165.00

  • 2 400ml tubs of frozen yoghurt
  • 4 small cups and spoons
  • 4 different toppings
  • 4 Uber swag scarfs

Cape Town – R120.00

  • 4 small cups of frozen yoghurt
  • 4 different toppings
  • 4 Uber swag scarfs

Uber is also integrating the dessert into its Mandela Day plans, by taking children from the Alex Aids Project in Johannesburg and Metro Kids Africa in Cape Town into Filo and Myog stores so they can make their own bowls of frozen yoghurt and pour on the toppings.

This isn’t the first time Uber’s used its app’s hailing ability to deliver something other than a taxi — it’s delivered everything from roses for Valentines Day to cats for users in need of cuddles.
