Cape Talk, Talk Radio 702 announce Small Business Awards winners

The Cape Talk Small Business Awards and Radio 702 Small Business Awards winners have been announced, with leather goods manufacturer Research Unit taking home top honours and the Cape and textbook service Book Express claiming the Gauteng prize.

In the Cape, the budding company lead confectionery maker Sweet Temptations Toffees and holiday rental service Perfect Hideaway in second and third respectively. Gauteng saw Scimatics Solutions — tuition service — and Tutuka Motor Lab — an auto body repair centre — follow Book Express home.

Research Unit is a tiny company out of Cape Town, run by a husband and wife team. Since 2011, the company has been manufacturing leather goods of a high quality, exuding elegance, minimalism and innovation.

Book Express, meanwhile, aims to solve textbook-seeking problems of students and professionals regularly suffer from — inconvenience, high pirce and lack of guidance.

Ivan Epstein, CEO of Sage AAMEA — one of the sponsors of the event — notes the high quality of the entrants in this year’s Cape event:

Our winner and our two runner-ups illustrate just how much potential there is in South Africa for small businesses that dream big and execute well. Congratulations to them.

Research Unit were awarded a laptop and free access to Sage’s Accounting software, training and development support. Additionally, it also walked away with R250 000 airtime on Cape Talk and advertising exposure on Google Display Network to the value of R25 000. Book Express were awarded the same, but with the airtime featuring on Talk Radio 702.

The runners-up also took home a Sage software bundle, a free training course or seminar, and an airtime package to the value of R150 000 on Cape Talk and Talk Radio 702.
