From mobile marketplaces for street vendors to prosthetics and electric scooters, 16 startups with a keen interest to tackle social and environmental issues have been chosen from around the world to pitch for a share of US$1-million from Chivas Regal’s The Venture competition.
“Enabling the growth of social entrepreneurs has become a key focus for Chivas Regal through The Venture campaign. We are really excited to have Lumkani representing South Africa on a global stage and we urge fellow South Africans to vote for Lumkani’s life-saving initiative,” said Paul Scanlon, MD of Pernod Ricard for South Africa and Namibia in a press release.
From 11 May to 14 June, Lumkani will go head to head with the rest of the finalists in a public vote, competing for an initial share of US$250 000 (from the US$1 million fund) in San Fransisco.
All startup finalists are also given a week’s accelerator course in Silicon Valley, where they will receive mentorship from companies such as Google, Duarte and IDEO.
The public is urged to vote for their favourite finalist on the The Venture website here. Below are the 16 chosen finalists of The Venture competition.

To address this issue, we at Algramo buy essential products, such as rice, beans, lentils and sugar, in bulk from suppliers and distribute them directly to small convenience stores through our unique mechanical dispensers.
