Lagos StartupWeek hopes to become ‘next big thing’ in Africa’s tech ecosystem

Lagos is fast becoming a startup powerhouse in Africa. It’s not only the second fastest growing city in Africa, but the seventh internationally. In the past year the city launched car ordering service Uber, CcHub announced three new incubator companies, and a continent-wide logistics program from two of its largest ecommerce stores, among other things.

The city will soon be host to Lagos StartupWeek, an event geared towards entrepreneurs and business owners not only in Lagos, but all over Africa. The week-long initiative expects to host one thousand participants from across Lagos, the greater region, the US, and the UK among other countries. StartupWeek hopes to become Africa’s next big tech event and being hosted in Lagos makes that a possibility.

The five-day event will feature various sessions, keynotes, panels and meetups hosted by local and visiting entrepreneurs. Speakers will consist of industry experts, thought leaders, and community supporters. Veterans will be sharing their experience with budding business owners.

Quoted in a press release, Olumide Olayinka, a member of the Lagos Startup Week organising community, had this to say about Nigeria:

The worlds[sic] focus is on Africa at the moment with Nigeria being a pivot point for investment activities in the continent. Africa is certainly rising and Nigeria appears to be leading this rebirth.

Lagos StartupWeek aims to give the critical mass needed to support the growing community of entrepreneurs and attract investors and mentors from across the globe.

Andrew Hyde, founder of Startup Week, said the event is a catalyst for entrepreneurs: tartup week is a Catalyst for new opportunities. When you bring dedicated entrepreneurs with good ideas together with mentors and investors, Great things are going to happen.
