Data startup WhereIsMyTransport scoops up 2015 Global Grand MobiPrize

South African data startup WhereIsMyTransport (WIMT) has been awarded the 2015 Global Grand MobiPrize. The award further establishes the company’s role as an activist against climate change.

Having taken place in New Delhi, India, the awards ceremony is part of the Sustainable Mobility & Accessibility Research & Transformation (SMART) initiative at the University of Michigan in the US. SMART seeks to honour businesses that have both environmental and economic impact through sustainable transportation and new mobility.

WIMT is behind a platform for smart urban transport in the emerging regions of the globe. It aims to connect cities, operators, and commuters for a sustainable, efficient transport system. The startup is behind the FindMyWayApp which is an urban transport app.

“A hearty congratulations goes to Cape Town-based WhereIsMyTransport, the 2015 Global Grand MobiPrize winner!” MobiPlatform wrote in an announcement. “With a focus on cities in emerging economies it supports smart, integrated, and accessible transport by providing integrated multi-modal travel information.”

WIMT was awarded US$5 000 alongside networking and mentorship opportunities.

After being named one of the winners at the 2015 South African Climate Solver Awards by World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa, WIMT is also joining the 2015 Entrepreneur’s Call for Climate Action at the COP21 in Paris this year. The Call focuses on the community of international entrepreneurs who are already dedicated to using business and innovation to slow the effects of climate change and improve environmental and living conditions worldwide.

In September, the Cape Town company announced a R12-million funding round and its international expansion with new offices in London.
