BlackBOX TV declared winner of Seedstars Maputo

Seedstar World’s Maputo event took place on Friday 15 July and saw ten startups battle it out for their space at the final in Switzerland.

BlackBOX TV, a broadcasting service which allows you to stream content without an internet connection, emerged as the overall winner of the Mozambique leg of the tour.  They also received the acknowledgement of ‘Most Promising Seed-stage Startup of Seedstars World Mozambique 2016’.

The competition was by no means easy, as BlackBOX TV beat out other competitors such as Mola Play, a mobile app that uses peer-to-peer connectivity to send and receive payments, Vamobi Net, a startup which aimed to modernise the management systems of water supply/distribution in developing countries as well as Kharinlda, an intelligent advertising tool used by supermarkets and for price comparisons.

The competition leading up to the finals saw over 4000 applicants enter with 700 selected startups taking part, eventually being whittled down to 65 finalists.

Some of the South African winners include:

  • ID Work –  A service which collates reputable informal service providers and connects them with employers.
  • Sortd – An organising tool which categorises your email and instant messages into a set of to-do-lists
  • Wumdrop –  A courier service that uses an app to collect and deliver packages anywhere and at any time

These three South African finalists alone are tough competition, which is why the finals will prove that much difficult for all startups in attendance. Even though the competition is great so far, the prize and experience is far greater.

The finals will see regional winners vying for US$1-million and the opportunity to network with some of the world’s best mentors and investors.
