Nigerian shopping giant, Jumia, recently announced the launch of its third-party payment solution which provides a ‘more convenient’ payment method to its users.
Jumia‘s cash-on-delivery payment method constitutes between 70-90% of its current payment methods. Its new initiative, JumiaPay, will facilitate online payments across the 23 countries the company operates in.
“Jumia Pay has a very simple yet crucial objective: go even further in providing a safe, a secure and a convenient shopping experience to our customers, building trust along the way between us, our thousands of sellers and our millions of customers,” said Co-CEO of Jumia, Jeremy Hodara in a press release to Ventureburn.
“We are very proud to be able to offer this new service to our customers and participate in building financial inclusion in Africa to unbanked or underbanked populations,” he continued.
JumiaPay will first be implemented in its biggest market, Nigeria with more innovations reportedly still to come before the end of the year.
Customer wishing to use the new payment option can do so when checking out with an order. They will be prompted to select their bank account, fill in their details, and their Nigerian Uniform Bank Account Number. From there, the user will proceed through two security checks to authenticate payment.
Jumia has also collaborated with some of the world’s leaders in telecoms such as MTN, Orange and Tigo. This will allow the company to launch their mobile money solutions across 20 platforms spanning across eight African countries such as Senegal, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda and Nigeria.
Orange Money solutions will seek to launch in Ivory Coast on two of Jumia’s biggest platforms, Jumia Mall and Jumia Market, formerly known as Kaymu. MTN Mobile money, as well as Tigo Cash, are currently live across Jumia’s platforms in seven African countries.
