Seedstars World crowns health startup winner in Dar Es Salaam

Micro health insurance company, Jamii has won the Seedstars World Dar Es Salaam event. The startups will go on to represent Tanzania at in the Seedstars World finals next year.

The event, which took place on Saturday at the Buni Hub, saw many startups pitch for their ticket to the finals. Jamii pitched its health insurance scheme for low-income families, which costs US$1 a mont.

The event was carried out with support from the Swiss Embassy, TANZICT as well as Buni Hub, VC4Africa and Lionesses of Africa.

Jamii offers health insurance for low-income familes for US$1 a month.

“Winning a competition alone has never been a guarantee to success. But participating is most rewarding due to the exposure and attention which every business needs. I believe that the new generation of young entrepreneurs will shape Tanzania’s business landscape in a significant way, watch out,” said the Swiss ambassador to Zambia, Arthur Mattli, in a press release to Ventureburn.

“It is our effort to see that startups in Tanzania get the attention they need from the Government. In achieving that goal, we are supporting Seedstars this year because we need to give exposure to our Tanzanian startups to get International attention ,” said director for communication services ministry of works, transport and communications, Clarence Ichwekeleza.

The runners up were medicine delivery service, Colifly, who took second place for their idea to deliver medication via drones. Eco-friendly company EcoAct Tanzania took third place for their recycling efforts entailing turning plastic waste into environmentally friendly lumber.

“The startup ecosystem in Tanzania has been growing exponentially and so does the quality of the startups themselves. We have been very humbled by the talent showcased at the event last Saturday and we are extremely happy and proud to bring our first female African entrepreneur to the global stage,” explained Associate at Seedstars World, Selam Kebede.

Next stop on Seedstars World global tour will be Uganda, at the Outbox Hub in Kampala.
