Web Summit, which claims to be one of the world’s biggest tech events, is looking at holding an event in Africa, the event’s founder and CEO Paddy Cosgrave has revealed.

Cosgrave was quoted in an article on Sunday by Portuguese business newspaper Jornal Económico saying that the Web Summit is looking at hosting a smaller event in Africa, similar to its Collision conference that it hosts annually in Toronto and its Rise conferences in Hong Kong.

“We have been analysing several countries (in Africa) for this purpose. Maybe in 2022,” he told O Jornal Económico.

He said Web Summit has already looked at South Africa, Angola, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana and Rwanda.

Web Summit did not respond to request to comment on why the company is looking at hosting an event in Africa now, what kind of location Web Summit is looking for and what time of the year the organisers are keen to hold the event in Africa.

This year’s full summit edition, which was held last week, saw 70 000 attendees and 2150 startups (including 41 African startups) descend on Lisbon.
