New free programme to launch for SA entrepreneurs

A new free programme, The Global Young Innovators Programme, targetted at young innovators and entrepreneurs in South Africa and the UK has officially opened for applications. 

Only 60 applicants, collectively from South Africa and the UK will be chosen to participate in the exciting programme. 

Applications for The Global Young Innovators Programme close 8 January 2021

Targetting a specific age group of applicants, from 18 – 30 years old, the programme aims to generate innovative solutions to pressing issues faced across the world. 

During the informative programme, participants will work together to design multiple projects that address five global challenges. 

The programme

The Global Young Innovators Programme’s main objective is to encourage collaboration amongst entrepreneurs by removing barriers to accelerate an entrepreneurial environment driven by performance. 

Held virtually, The Global Young Innovators Programme aims to feature the brightest young innovators that will present early-stage ideas. 

The programme is designed by #IdeasMeanBusiness, an Innovate UK campaign, and Innovate UK, a leading innovation agency that forms part of UK Research and Innovation.

The programme aims to amplify entrepreneurs’ impactful ideas that have the potential to thrive in the market.

The programme will offer SA and UK entrepreneurs:

  • A virtual five-day boot camp
  • The opportunity to collaborate with young individuals from the UK and SA
  • A three-nine month programme that includes business support and mentoring
  • A six-stage innovation webinar series
  • A virtual two-day pitch training
  • Fifteen of the best projects will have the ability to access seed funding at R200 000.
  • The opportunity to access industry leaders and innovation experts.
  • Entrepreneurs will receive an action plan, a business plan, and funding application.

Entrepreneurs chosen for the programme will consist of 30 South Africans and 30 UK residents. 

Application process

SA and UK entrepreneurs between the ages of 18-30 years old that wish to apply for the programme can do so online before 8 January 2021. Applicants must be prepared to build a profile as a role model by participating in case studies, blogs, video content, and PR activity.

The five global challenges

Selected entrepreneurs will generate solutions to solve these five global challenges:

  • Low–Carbon – Innovations that encourage the move towards a low-carbon economy.
  • Infrastructure – Innovative solutions that aim to support the sustainable expansion of cities, rural communities, and infrastructure.
  • Urban and Rural Communities – Innovations that impact urban and rural communities positively by ensuring they are sustainable while maintaining their heritage and cultural access. In addition, innovative solutions that support access to and retain clean water and sanitation.
  • Education – Innovative products and services that aim to improve education and training.
  • Quality Healthcare – Solutions that improve the quality of healthcare provision.
