Gideon Idowu and Johnathon Oppenheimer

The Jennifer Ward-Oppenheimer Research Grant has been supporting African researchers since its inception, awarding over $600,000 to date, and aims to foster innovative research in environmental and allied sciences, addressing current and future issues facing the continent. With over 1000 applications since its launch, the grant has been able to provide inclusive early-career funding for African scientists.

Dr. Gideon Idowu, a previous recipient, has conducted research on microplastic pollution in Africa’s freshwater systems. Dr. Idowu sought to provide evidence of the effects of microplastics and endocrine-disrupting chemicals on growth and reproduction in species, to urge policy-makers to take action to reduce plastic waste.
