DataPathology, an African healthtech start-up specialising in digital pathology, has raised its second seed round of funding. The round, amounting to $1 million, was led by AZUR Fund, marking a significant milestone for the company.

Its first raise of $223 000 was secured with Witamax over a year ago.

Founded by Dr Hicham El Attar, a prominent anatomopathology professor from Morocco, and data and IT expert Mohammed El Khannoussi, the company is committed to revolutionising pathology diagnosis and improving the quality of service provided to practitioners and patients in medically underserved areas.

DataPathology aims to serve multidisciplinary clinics and pathology centres that face the dual challenge of increasing cancer cases and limited access to medical facilities. It offers a comprehensive fully digital AI-based solution that adheres to the highest diagnostic standards, yielding excellent results.

Since its initial funding round with Witamax, DataPathology has rapidly established itself as a leading player in digital labs. It introduced the first digital cervical screening platform in Morocco and launched the first digital lab service in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa.

Despite being operational for only a few months, DataPathology has already served over 100 customer pathologists and provided diagnostic services to a dozen clinics across Morocco and elsewhere on the continent. The company has successfully completed more than 1 200 diagnostic cases during this short period.

With the recent seed round led by AZUR Fund, DataPathology aims to strengthen its presence in Africa and further develop its AI-based screening solutions for other types of cancer, including breast, prostate, and bladder.

The additional funding will fuel the company’s expansion plans and enable it to recruit regional and international talent to support its growth trajectory. The founders are already looking ahead to the future and are preparing for their series A project, confident in the promising prospects of digital pathology.

DataPathology’s success demonstrates the increasing importance of healthtech innovations in addressing healthcare challenges in Africa. By leveraging advanced technologies like AI and digitisation, the company is not only improving access to quality pathology services but also making significant strides in the fight against cancer in underserved regions.
