AWS re:Invent 2023: Five of the biggest announcements

AWS re:Invent 2023, the annual cloud computing conference hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS), is currently underway in Las Vegas. The event has been packed with announcements of new products, services, and partnerships, but here are five of the biggest:

1. Amazon Q: A new generative AI assistant for businesses

Amazon Q is a new generative AI assistant that can be tailored to a customer’s business to help employees get answers to questions, solve problems, generate content, and take actions using the data and expertise found at their company. Amazon Q is still in preview mode, but its capabilities are already impressive.

2. Amazon S3 Express One Zone: A new storage class for performance-critical applications

Amazon S3 Express One Zone is a new storage class designed to deliver the highest performance and lowest latency object storage for customers’ most frequently accessed data. It is up to 10 times faster than Amazon S3 Standard and can reduce request costs by up to 50%.

3. AWS Serverless announcements: Three new innovations to help customers analyse and manage data at any scale

  • Amazon Aurora Limitless Database: Automatically scales to millions of write transactions per second and manages petabytes of data while maintaining the simplicity of operating a single database.
  • Amazon ElastiCache Serverless: Makes it faster and easier to create highly available caches and instantly scales to meet application demand.
  • Amazon Redshift Serverless: Uses AI to predict workloads and automatically scale and optimise to meet price-performance targets.

4. AWS and NVIDIA collaboration: Supercharging generative AI

AWS and NVIDIA have announced an expanded collaboration to deliver the most advanced infrastructure, software, and services to power customers’ generative artificial intelligence (AI) innovations. The collaboration includes:

  • AWS to be the first cloud provider to offer NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips with new multi-node NVLink technology.
  • NVIDIA DGX Cloud, featuring GH200 NVL32, coming to AWS.
  • Project Ceiba: The world’s fastest GPU-powered AI supercomputer.
  • New Amazon EC2 instances powered by NVIDIA GH200, H200, L4S, and L4 GPUs.
  • NVIDIA software on AWS—NeMo LLM framework, NeMo Retriever, and BioNeMo—to boost generative AI development for custom models, semantic retrieval, and drug discovery.

5. AWS unveils next-generation self-designed chips: Graviton4 and Trainium2

AWS unveiled two new next-generation self-designed chips: Graviton4 and Trainium2.

  • Graviton4: The most powerful and energy-efficient AWS processor for a broad range of cloud workloads.
  • Trainium2: Designed to deliver the highest performance compute on AWS for training foundation models faster and at a lower cost, while using less energy.

These announcements are just a few of the many that were made at AWS re:Invent 2023. The event is still ongoing, so stay tuned for more news and updates.
