Konga to host screening of ‘Crocodile in the Yangtze (The Alibaba Story)’

Konga believes that 2014 will be a promising and rewarding year for the Nigerian technology and business ecosystems, not only because there will be growth, but because these sectors will provide solutions to Nigerians at large.

In an effort to inspire, and kick off 2014 in style, Nigerian ecommerce site Konga, in collaboration with Porter Erisman, are hosting a screening of the award-winning documentary Crocodile in the Yangtze (The Alibaba story), taking place at the Ozone Cinemas, Yaba Lagos on 14 January.

The film follows the remarkable story of China’s ecommerce giant, Alibaba, from its humble beginnings back when internet entrepreneur Jack Ma started the company in a small apartment, all the way to beating out eBay in China, making Alibaba China’s “first global internet company.”

The film chronicles Porter Erisman’s time at Alibaba, where he worked as Vice President from 2000-2008, who is also the film’s producer and director.

So far the documentary has been screened in 11 locations around the world, and this marks the first time it will be screened in Africa, and Nigeria. The event will be opened with an introduction from Sim Shagaya, CEO of Konga, followed by a Q&A session with Porter Erisman. There will also be a post-movie roundup by a special guest.

The ecommerce platform has released a limited number of tickets, going for N500 on Konga, and all proceeds will be donated to the Yaba Police Station for internet access provision.

Konga is making big waves in Nigeria’s ecommerce scene right now with its US$25-million investment from its latest round making the company one of the biggest ecommerce players in Nigeria.
