South African photo editing startup Over wins global U-Start competition
Hailing from Cape Town, South Africa, mobile app startup Over has been named the number one startup at the international U-Start competition in Milan, Italy.
The U-Start competition has sourced impressive early-stage ventures from across the globe. With startups hailing from Brazil, Chile, Russia, South Africa and Europe, eighteen ventures were given the opportunity to pitch their ideas in front of a group of renowned international investors.
The five South African startups which were chosen to pitch their businesses in Milan this week were CapeRay, wiGroup, Mellowcab, SteadiDrone and Over. The latter of which was named the winner based on sustainability and scalability.
If you’re not familiar with the company, Over is a mobile app (currently only available on iOS) that enables you to overlay images with arty text and icons to help share more informative stories. Where the beauty of Instagram lies in its variety of filters, Over allows you to customise your snaps using typography among other things.

Designed by Aaron Marshall and Jefferey Jackson, Over is also building a marketplace that showcases several exclusive art and font packs for purchase or free download.
Referring to the U-Start event in Milan, Marshall told Ventureburn, “It felt a little surreal to be sharing our story with a group of influencers from all over the planet in a sophisticated, beautiful city. The people behind U-start put on a great event. We made some connections that could be hugely beneficial to our mission.”
By winning the U-Start competition, Over is now being given the opportunity to take part in the U-Start international investment road show which gives the founders a chance to meet a number of prominent investors, venture capitalists, angel investors and family offices from an array of global markets.
Marshal added saying that he’s “feeling inspired” and already thinking bigger than ever and ready to get back to building “exciting new products”. Be sure to watch this space.
