SEACOM supporting more of Uganda’s tech hubs

African internet service provider SEACOM is extending its support for Uganda’s technology incubation hubs. Both Hivecolab and Outbox Hub will be receiving 20Mbps connections for their developers and entrepreneurs in the tech industry.

According to Joseph Muriithi, SEACOM’s MD for Kenya, the move is part of their plan to innovate Africa. “This investment in bandwidth falls in line with SEACOM’s commitment to supporting technology innovation in Africa and to helping Uganda’s technology industry capitalise on the opportunities of broadband Internet,” he says.

SEACOM has been supporting innovation hubs in Kenya and Uganda from 2012 and 2014 respectively. Kenya’s Nailab, iHub, mLab, and 88mph have received support from the service provider.

The company aims to ensure over 80% of East African community has internet access by 2030. Its move into Uganda is part of a strategy to become a pan-African service provider.

East Africa’s main cable station for East Africa is Mombasa, which links to Asia, Europe and South Africa, and extends inland to Nairobi.

The landing station in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania offers redundancy for Uganda to ensure high service availability and service levels for internet users in the city.
