The initiative provides an annual spotlight for tech startups in regions across the globe with a focus on ventures that are under five years old. The awards aim to highlight up-and-coming tech solutions.

Nominations for the SASAwards opened in April (see this story). Entries are judged by a panel of judges who are all leaders in the respective fields, as well as by public vote.

SASAwards founder and Setup A Startup CEO Mckevin Ayaba (pictured above, with microphone), commenting in a statement last Wednesday (10 July) said the aims of the awards is to connect, support, and celebrate key players in national and regional startup ecosystems worldwide.

In addition, Ayaba said the awards also aim to connect entrepreneurs and create a “matrix of opportunities” for international partnerships, commercial exchange, and investment opportunities.

“We do this by working bottom up with local startup ecosystems, always putting the founders and startup ecosystem supporters first,” added Ayaba.

From their inception in 2012 in the Nordic region, the Global Startup Awards has grown to include South East and South Asia, Central Europe, Euro-Asia, South Europe and Southern Africa.

Ayaba said the awards are “deeply grateful” to be partnering with the SA Innovation Summit for the hosting of the South Africa finals of the 2019 edition of the Southern Africa Startup Awards.

SA Innovation Summit chairperson Audrey Verhaeghe said the summit is “honoured” to provide a space for the event.

Added Verhaeghe: “We believe in collaborating with local and international partners to strengthen the impact of the platforms we create, assisting and taking African ideas to the world.”
