Agritech startup Afrikamart wins Seedstars Dakar

Senegalese agritech startup Afrikamart has been named as the winner of last week’s Seedstars Dakar pitching event.

The startup, which was founded in December last year, aims to be the largest quality fresh food supplier in West Africa.

Afrikamart founder and COO Albert Diouf (pictured above, right) explained in a statement Thursday last week (22 August) that the startup designs tools and services to bring farmers closer to processors, wholesalers, restaurants, supermarkets and individuals.

“We create value in addressing three of the biggest challenges in the agrifood sector, effective agriculture, market access and logistics,” said Diouf.

Afrikamart will now represent Senegal at the Seedstars Africa summit

In all eight startups pitched at the event which was held in the Senegalese capital (see this story).

Another agrifood tech startup Amalog Afrique was placed second while fleet and delivery platform Car Rapide Prestige won third place at the event.

A jury panel comprised of Brightmore managing partner Ndeye Thiaw, Netherlands Trust Fund 1V ITC national coordinator Diabel Ndaw, Grofin investment manager Elhadji Malick Soumare and Seedstars World regional manager for Africa Claudia Makadristo picked the winners.

Makadristo, commenting in the same statement, said Dakar has shown “year after year” that it is able to produce high quality startups. “And so of course this year the competition was fierce yet again,” she added.

Afrikamart will now represent Senegal at the Seedstars Africa summit which will be held in Johannesburg in December (see this story) in addition the startup will get access to a three month investment readiness programme.

At the Africa summit, Afrikamart will get a chance to win a spot to attend the Seedstars Global Summit in Switzerland where the winning startup will take home a $500 000 investment prize.

Last year’s edition was won by payments startup Sudpay (see this story).
