The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) has extended the deadline of its Youth Challenge to 30 September.

The challenge is aimed at innovators between the ages of 18 and 35 years who have innovative development ideas that address infrastructural needs across various sectors. The winning submissions will attract a total of R1.5-million in prize money.

The initial application deadline was 31 August, this after the competition was launched in July.

The DBSA Youth Challenge has a total prize pool of R1.5-million, applications will now close on 30 September

The bank said in a statement yesterday that it is impressed by the number of entries it has received since launching the campaign.

The bank added that it believes the deadline extension will provide more young people with more time to think through and submit entries, which it said can contribute to building Africa’s prosperity.

DBSA head of communication and marketing Sebolelo Matsoso said as development practitioners, the bank partners with stakeholders to co-produce impactful development solutions.

“Through initiatives such as the DBSA Youth Challenge, we look forward to working more closely with a segment of our society that is the foundation for our country’s future,” added Matsoso.

Entries must address one or more of the infrastructure development needs within the DBSA’s core sectors. These are energy, water, transport, information communication technology (ICT) and or social sectors like health, education and human settlement (housing).

Entries should also be original, relevant to society, scalable and feasible. Interested individuals can submit their ideas online or by posting them to DBSA (1258 Lever Road, Headway Hill, Midrand, 1685).

The top 10 finalists will have an opportunity to promote their ideas and network with potential sponsors before the three winners are announced at a gala event later in the year.
