Entries open for APO Group African Women in Media Award

The APO Group, a media relations consulting firm in Africa, has recently opened entries for the second annual APO Group African Women in Media Award.

The award honours and assists in empowering African female journalists who shine a light on African female entrepreneurs

The winner will receive a $2500 (+/- R41651.00) cash prize and access to online courses from a prominent international university.

The event will take place on the 2nd to 3rd December this year and will be hosted by the 6th annual Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum’s (AWIEF). The Founder and Chairman of the APO Group, Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard, explained that the awards ceremony was launched in 2019 and that it was successful in highlighting female journalists who share the stories of African female entrepreneurs.

“We are proud to continue The APO Group African Women in Media Award as part of our commitment to supporting the development of journalism on the continent. We look forward to presenting this award with AWIEF in Johannesburg as we celebrate women in journalism and entrepreneurship,” said Pompgne-Mognard.

How to submit entries for the award

The entry stories must have been published between the 1st of January and 31st of October 2020. Applicants can submit their entries online here. The finalists will be announced on the 20th of November 2020.

Eligible entries for the APO Group African Women in Media Award must appeal to an international audience while providing worthwhile insights for African Female Entrepreneurs. The entries will be judged on their human interest angle as well as their content, creativity, analysis, and writing.

The entries are open to fully employed or freelancing bloggers and journalists that are based in Africa. The entry stories can be published or broadcasted stories that can be submitted in English, Arabic, Portuguese, and French.

The entries are open to a radio story, a television feature, website or blog, and printed publication whose audience is based in Africa. The television entries need to be first uploaded to YouTube and radio broadcasts need to be uploaded to SoundCloud.

For printed articles, they must be scanned and submitted electronically. Written submissions must be uploaded via the URL link to the blog post or online piece. 

2019 winner of APO Group African Women in Media Award

The previous winner of the APO Group African Women in Media Award was a Ugandan Journalist, Nila Yasmin. She won the award for her article, “Aweko Faith Is Turning Uganda’s Waste Into Wealth.”

Yasmin has worked as a news anchor for more than seven years for Ugandan radio stations such as Record Radio and HOT100. She has also been working for a CNN contracted media company called Media256, to create CNN Inside Africa and CNN African Voices.
