African businesses are set to gain a significant technological edge as Amazon Web Services (AWS) introduces Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet to its Amazon Bedrock platform. This advanced AI model promises to revolutionise how companies across the continent leverage artificial intelligence.

Data from Anthropic suggests that Claude 3.5 Sonnet sets a new standard for AI intelligence, outperforming other leading models—such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro—in areas including expert knowledge, coding, and complex reasoning.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet expands the range of high-performing foundation models (FMs) available on Amazon Bedrock. This addition provides customers with greater flexibility in balancing cost and performance for generative AI applications. Moreover, it ensures that clients can keep pace with technological advancements, offering the African market access to cutting-edge AI technology at competitive rates.

The new model boasts several notable strengths:

Creative writing: Claude 3.5 Sonnet demonstrates a significant improvement in understanding nuance and humour, producing high-quality written content with a more natural, human-like tone.

Image processing: The model excels at interpreting visual data, particularly charts and graphs, enabling faster and deeper insights. It can accurately decipher text from imperfect images, such as poorly scanned documents, extracting more information than from text alone.

Coding: When provided with appropriate instructions and tools, Claude 3.5 Sonnet can independently write, edit, and execute code with sophisticated reasoning and advanced troubleshooting capabilities, offering best-in-class accuracy.

This release fulfils Anthropic’s long-term commitment to provide AWS customers with access to future generations of its FMs via Amazon Bedrock, and marks the first offering in Anthropic’s forthcoming Claude 3.5 model family.
