MTN launches skills academy to bridge digital skills gap
MTN launched the MTN Skills Academy to equip South African youth while bridging the digital skills gap.
Providing a range of courses and training programs in areas such as coding, web development and digital marketing the consumer group introduces the series of course material to ensure that 60% of youth and adults have at least basic proficiency in digital skills by 2025.
How will it work?
The academy will come in the form of a user-friendly web-based platform, available to mobile users, and will provide free access to digital and financial courses, and career guidance including entrepreneurial skills development.
The MTN skills academy’s curriculum is expected to leverage partnerships with Coursera, Pace Career Centre among others to deliver advanced technology and business skills.
With features like low data use and accessibility for differently-abled individuals, the academy is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all.
The plan forward
MTN plans to demonstrate commitment to driving digital transformation in the country. The MTN Skills Academy falls in line with MTN’s mission to ensure that everyone deserves the benefits of digital literacy.
The goal is to inspire and invest in youth skills to create a pipeline of talent that will contribute towards innovation and growth of the digital economy.
With partners such as Pace and Coursera as strategic partners, the MTN Skills Academy is set to be a game-changer for digital education, according to Arthur Mukhuvha, General Manager of the MTN SA Foundation.
“The academy is a cornerstone of MTN’s Ambition 2025, which is our commitment to the development of a digital future for the benefit of all. Not only will the academy play a pivotal role in enhancing digital and financial skills, but it will also foster digital inclusion, innovation, and long-term career prospects for participants,” added Mukhuvha.
The academy’s curriculum will be tailored to meet industry demands to ensure that learners who complete courses on the platform are well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to the workforce.
MTN says it is expanding its network infrastructure, and increasing the availability of high-speed data services while it adds on other local initiatives to support digital transformation in the country.
“By investing in the youth, the company is investing in the future of the country and creating opportunities for innovation and growth in the digital economy. The launch of the MTN Skills Academy in South Africa is a significant milestone in bridging the digital divide and ensuring that young people possess the knowledge and tools required to succeed in the digital age,” Mukhuvha said in conclusion.
