UPDATE (9 March 2020): Seedstars World has announced that it has moved its annual Seedstars Summit — which was expected to take place from 31 March to 3 April 2020 in Lausanne, Switzerland — to an online-only event, following the increasing threat of the coronavirus.

Swiss emerging market startup competition Seedstars World has selected 11 African startups that will represent the continent at Seedstars Summit 2020.

The 11 were selected last Thursday (5 December) at Seedstars Summit Africa in Johannesburg. In all 30 startups were selected to attend the summit (see this story).

They include Roque Online (Angola), Crop2Cash (Nigeria), Exuus (Rwanda), Pezesha (Kenya), OKO Finance (Mali)), Nadji.bi (Gambia), Nvoicia (Ghana), Vectra (South Africa), Afrikamart (Senegal) and Teheca (Uganda).

The 11 startups will compete for $500 000 in equity investments at the Seedstars Global Summit

Seedstars World said in a statement earlier today that it also selected Mozambican startup Txapita through a wild car selection, which will see the company also participate at the Seedstars Global Summit.

At the global summit — which will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland — the 11 startups will compete with other startups from around the world for the title of Seedstars Global Winner and up to $500 000 in equity investments and other prizes.

Additional prizes were also awarded at Seedstars Summit Africa.

Ethiopia’s Zafree Papers won the Doen Land Restoration Prize and was awarded a $10 000 grant.

This, while OKO Finance will receive three-months access to Seedstars’ investment readiness program as the winner of the Job Creation Prize in partnership with the African Development Bank.

The remaining North African startups that have won Seedstars World pitching events will participate at the organisation’s Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regional event, which takes place this Thursday (12 December) in Casablanca.
